How We Started

I started mylifeletters.com based on my own practice of writing “life letters” to my children for many years. My jobs always required me to travel extensively and, once I had children, it was even harder to be away from home. While away, my thoughts often came back to the kids and so, in addition to our daily phone calls, I started writing to them while I was away. Sometimes it was a little note praising them for a little league win or for helping out their mother, but often my letters were more of a journal where I wrote about what was going on with my children at the moment, how I felt about them, what advice I was trying to give them, etc.

Some of the letters I mailed, and some I held on to since my son or daughter was not yet at a point in their life where I felt they would understand the letter. So, I dated the unmailed letters and placed them in a box with the intention of eventually giving the box of letters to my child—either when they were old enough to understand them or perhaps as a gift at some major milestone in their life such as graduation or marriage. Having lost my parents at an early age, I also felt good knowing that if anything were to happen to me my letters would live on and convey to my children how much I thought about them, how and why I loved them so much, and the values and traditions I strived to bring to them.

I loved this special ritual of writing letters to my kids, but over the years it always bothered me that my letters were accumulating in a box in my attic. What if the house caught fire or the roof leaked? What if I moved and the letters were lost or damaged in the process? What if something happened to me and in all the confusion my kids never got the letters? I knew I needed to get those letters into some kind of secure storage location and come up with a way to make sure that, no matter what happened, my children would receive the letters. Once I found a way to do this, I talked about it with friends and associates from time to time and realized others were interested in writing letters and creating securely stored letter collections for their children and grandchildren as well. And so, mylifeletters.com was born.

I cannot put into words how rewarding it has been to write letters to my children all these years (I still write them today). It has given me the time to stop and think about and appreciate my children and what a blessing they’ve been in my life. It has made me really feel and enjoy our time together, and as a result I feel more connected with them every day.

Being on the road inspired me to write letters, but even if you spend every waking moment with your children I promise you’ll deepen your relationship with them by writing them life letters. And they’ll treasure your letters like nothing else you could ever give them.
